Listen to a Sichuan Monk Playing Stringed Instrument

By LI Bai
Translated by YU Lan

According scholars' research, LI Bai wrote this poem when he was in Xuancheng in the current Anhui Province. He frequented this town in the last decade of his life and wrote many poems related to the place. Faraway from his hometown, he once met a fellow countryman, a monk, and listened to his music.

With fine instrument sits the Sichuan monk
Who's from west, where rises the Emei Mount
Strumming the strings, his fingers bring out sounds
Of pine trees that in many vales rebound
Like waters the sound rinses clean my heart
To frosty bells the fading notes depart
Dusk comes undetected in the green hill
Darkening autumn clouds that the sky fill

Farewell to Mount Jingmen

By LI Bai
Translated by YU Lan

LI Bai wrote this poem around 724 AD when he left his homeland Sichuan for the first time to tour the lower reaches of the Changjiang River.

A journey from the Mount Jingmen
To the far land of old state Chu
Mounts retreat as expands the plain
Wilderness the river flows through
The moon descends like a mirror
The clouds rise to form a mirage
I love more this homeland river
My companion on this voyage

To An Absent Beauty
By LI Bai
Translated by YU Lan

When you were here flowers filled up the hall,
When you are gone, it's empty, the bed and all.
The embroidered quilts are there in bed in vain
Three years after your scents still remain

Your scents still here remain,
But there's no date for your return
Falling leaves makes me miss you
Clear dew drops wet the moss green

Note: LI Bai wrote three poems, of which this is the third one, to recall a loved one who was not at his side after he was demoted to serve his official duty somewhere else other than the capital city.

A Song on the River

By LI Bai
Translated by YU Lan

A fine boat with fine oars
Flutes and pipes aft and fore
Much to drink in the wine vessel
I drift with call girls off the shore
The yellow crane's for the immortal's mind
To follow sea gulls I am not the kind
Qu Yuan's poems shine like the the sun and the moon
Kings' palaces become barren knolls soon
Inspired, I hold my mountain-shaking brush
My poems bring rivers and oceans to a blush
Should fame and fortune last forever
Would flow backward the Han River.

Note: Scholars stipulated that LI Bai wrote this poem when touring the current Wuhan around the year 734 or 759. At that time, he was not an official favored by the court. The frustrations in his career led him to indulge in pleasure seeking. In this poem, he expressed his doubt about fame and fortune and the idea of immortality as embodied in the legend of an immortal flying away on a yellow crane from the Yellow Crane Tower on the south bank of the Changjiang River at Wuhan.

I admire you, a hermit free of catching dirt and dust
Devoted to sutra and Buddha, how relaxed you are
Today I am a lone goose without my companion
Sad and lonely every night, deep sorrow I sleep in
Better to be a nun to cut off my worldly desires
To study scriptures with you to ward off the evil guy
This way I will be among immortals when I die

Sadly I often miss fine things
And cry over the absence of beauty
The brilliant setting sun I watch alone
The autumn waters freeze my heart
Getting old I see how others detest me
And wish for retirement in poetry

Human world has no eternity
All the beings are birds in the tree
They scatter as weather changes suddenly
More so when apocalypse they see
Flowers in the clouds are but fantasy
Deep at night, only Zen shows reality
