Yelü Chucai

Around Bright and Clear Day I passed this border town
Some sentiment did I experience standing in the wind
The twittering of wild birds was beyond my understanding
The colorful mountain flowers failed my recognition
Grape wines well brewed, my mind was disturbed by sorrow
Cups of precious stone cold, my drunken eyes savored their glare
My thoughts went far away to my old house and garden
Where partridges should chirp in pear blossoms in the yard

押韵

Around Bright and Clear Day I passed this border town
Some sentiment did I experience in the wind blown
The twittering wild birds were beyond comprehension
The colorful mountain flowers failed my recognition
Grape wines well brewed, my mind was disturbed by sorrow
Precious stone cups cold, my drunken eyes savored their glow
My thoughts went for my old house nice and far away
Partridges chirp in pear-blossomed compounds everyday

This day of a past year I went through a pass among pine trees
Hard was it for the horse-drawn cart to travel on uneven roads
The surging tides of the big lake pushed up waves white
The roaring winds of the Tianshan Mountain shook woods red
In the frost falling season the weather was very cool
Unlike the day of the Mid-Autumn, the moon seemed colder
It was like a dream when I recalled the past three falls
Unaware in my dream, I was brought to Xin’an my destination

押韵( in progress)

This day of a past year a pass among pine trees I traveled by
Hard was it for the cart-drawing horses on uneven roads to tread
The surging tides of the Big Lake pushed up white waves high
The roaring winds of the Tianshan Mountain shook woods red

In the frost falling season very cool was the weather
Unlike around the Mid-Autumn, the moon seemed colder
It was like a dream when I recalled the past three falls
Unaware in it, I was brought in front of Xin'an's walls.

Written at the Rain Crag

By SU Shi
Translated by YU Lan

Where is my recent sorrow?
Where my pleasure to know?
The miseries of historical magnitude
In west wind does me seclude.
In bamboo groves seeking streams,
Under the clouds planting trees,
I can be called a real idle hand.
But the idleness of my heart
Should not dwell in a hermit land.

Say not past deeds were wrong
And those of today are right.
Take cups of wine to swallow down.
Drunk I know not who I am,
The moon? the cloud? or a crane?
Cold dew, high wind,
Pine treetops, osmanthus flowers,
I'm drunk yet I'm sane.
By the north window, soundly asleep
I pray no crying birds disturb my dream

Of Old Memories

By HUANG Jingren
Translated by YU Lan

Woken at the window I felt drowsy still,
Crying cuckoos urged me to bid quick farewell.
Our old paintings and vows embody love deep,
Now my Zen couch does betray some feelings cheap.
Our ties severed, thoughts of you like water flow,
The past to recall seems to be lives ago.
The fairy world of moon and clouds is still there,
I try to pursue your fragrance far and near.

Drinking Song

Li Po

Translated by Fang Huzhai

Don't you see that the Yellow River pours down from heaven
And never returns after it reaches the ocean?
Don't you see the old sad seeing hair grey in mirror
That turns from the morning black to snow white at evening hour?
In the zenith of life one should enjoy merry-making
And not leave his wine cup empty under a moon shining
If I were a talent born from nature and heaven
The money I exhaust should definitely return
Oh, what a fun to roast the lamb and taste the beef
At proper time drinking three hundred cups is no extreme
Oh, come ye my drinking buddies, the two hermit friends
Lay down not your cups before the supply of wine ends
Here I will sing a song for all you guys
Lend me your ears and listen with closed eyes:
What's so treasurable, those chimes, bells and feasts?
I'd rather be long drunk than see a world of beasts.
Into oblivion went all revered saints of past
Only a connoisseur's fame in history can last
When the Lord of Chen State held feast at Pingle Temple
He cared not how costly the fine wines per vessel
Now my master, why do you say you are short in money
Just go and buy liquor to enjoy moments happy
Son, lead out my nice horse and take out my fur coat
And pawn them for fine wine to pour down my throat
Man, drinking with you removes my sorrow of heavy load

A Message for My Friends after a Dream

Li Po
Translated by Fang Huzhai (draft)

Those back from the seas chat about the Yingzhou Mount
To me, it is not credible, hidden in steamy waters
Those south-easterners talk about the Tianmu Mount
In fleeting rosy clouds, it can be seen by observers
Rising towards the sky, the Tianmu spreads far and wide
Vying with the Five Mounts and pushing another aside
The Tiantai Mountain said to be extremely high
Is dwarfed by Tianmu and can only on ground lie
The thought of Tianmu put me in a dream about the south east
Overnight I seemed to have flown over a lake under the moon
The moon over the lake shines on me
And accompanies me to the Stream of Shanshi
The house where Xie Lingyun once lodged is still there
Monkeys make sounds by the rippling waters clear

Wearing Xie’s hiking shoes I climbed up mountain path in clouds
Seeing the sun on ocean, and hearing the heavenly rooster aloud
The paths zigzag among crags and rocks and there’re no ends
Enchanted by flowers I lean on rocks when darkness descends
Bears roar, dragons rumble and streams in rocks gurgle on
Shaking the forests deep and startling layers of rocks strong
From dark clouds rains are about to pour down
Above waters stream forms a layer of white gown
Suddenly I see a lightening
Cracking hills and mountains
In the sky there’s an opening
Its stone gate widely opens

In the unfathomable vast and blue sky
Golden palaces bathe in heavenly light
Wearing rainbows and riding clouds
In throngs fairies proceed out
Tigers beat drums and fairy birds turn wheels
Stately stand immortals, close on heels
Suddenly was startled my spoor soul
I woke up and heaved out a deep sigh
From my pillow and bed a moment ago
The rosy smokes dispersed and passed by
How world pleasures they resemble
That like rivers eastward flow

Not knowing when to return hereby I bid you adieu
Under the cliff I leave a white deer on the meadow
Any time you can to the famed mount ride and go
How can I disgrace myself to serve men in power
And fill my heart with much woe?
