        那个女人被推上受审的法庭，是1992年冬月一个没有阳光，满天飘着雪花的日子。
        她叫伊洁。打从一开始，她就似乎知道有这么一天在等待着她。这不能不说是件很糟糕的事情。
        自从伊洁认为很糟糕的事情发生后，人们见到她时，她总是像对付人们的谴责似的喃喃而语：“事情怎么会是这样呢？事情怎么会是这样呢？”

First

        It was a winter day of heavy snow without sunshine in the year of 1992 when that woman was brought to court.
        Her name was Yi Jie. She seemed to know that very day had been waiting for her. That was a very bad thing.
        Ever since that thing which she thought was terrible happened, people always saw her  mumble,  "How could things be this way, how could things  go so wrong?"  As if it was the way she dealt with people's condemnation.

        这样一来，本来就显纤弱，有些凄婉相的她就更是萎作一团。但是，人们分明又由她迷惘凄切的目光中看到了一种内荏，怯中带了许多的弱。很多的男人是喜欢有这样一种眼神的女孩的。人们认为，有这样一种眼神的女孩，是很善解人意的。可是，伊洁好像是个例外。
        Thus, her fragile, sad and mild image now seemed to be even worse. However, from her  bewildered looks and mournful eyes people could tell that she was inwardly weak---- such a combination of cowardice and weakness. People think that girls with this kind of eye expression can move many men. They think that this kind of girl are gentle and understanding, but Yi Jie was an exception.
        那天，她的靠右边的一颗门齿根部又在不断地向外涌着血。她并没将涌到嘴边的血液吐出，而是像喝琼浆玉液般将其全部吞进了肚中。她在一边“踏、踏、踏”地向受审台走，一边吞噬着那些有着浓重的咸涩味和血腥味的液体时，笑了。笑得妖冶、媚人。法庭内在座的人们见她那样一种媚笑，全愤怒了。有声音在骂她：“骚货、臭婊子、祸水。到这种地步了，还忘不了发情。”
        That day, her gums were bleeding uncontrollably. But she didn't spit her gum blood which already had rushed to the corner of her mouth, and instead, she swallowed it as if it was something delicious. As she drummed the floor with a tap, tap, tap walking towards the trial stand, she swallowed her salty blood  which had a foul smell. She smiled. Her smile was so charming and  coquettish
that she irritated all the people in the courtroom. Some insulted her, saying, "Bitch, slut, trouble maker. Even now in the court you are still in heat."

是的，伊洁分明听到人们的怒骂。人们个个义愤填膺，个个正人君子，个个贞节淑女，个个贤妻良母。伊洁分明感到有好多手指好多拳头向她戳来抡来。这样的手指，这样的拳头断然不是今天才向她戳来、抡来的。她踉跄了一下。在她踉跄的霎间，她确实讥讽地笑了。笑得一点也没被人发现。俄尔，她感到含在她口中的液体被另一个温暖而厚实的嘴唇吸走了。这个嘴唇为她吸走过无数次由门齿根部涌出的血液。每次都是那么虔诚地吸呀吸。为了治这门齿根部出血的病，那个长着厚嘴唇的男人不惜一切代价地为她寻药、寻医，直到伊洁受审时，也没将门齿根部出血的病医好。医生一开始说这种牙齿根部常出血的病症是血小板减少造成的。医生还解释说：这种血小板减少，就意味着当人体某一部位受伤出血时，因血液中缺少血小板至使血液凝固力减弱，导致受伤者血流不止，严重的可丢性命。说得伊洁很有些后怕。后来遵照医生的叮嘱吃了很多带红皮的生花生，喝了无数瓶涩得没法喝的“宁血糖浆”，还吃过什么药，伊洁忘记了。吃过一段时间的药后，去验血，验血单上的血小板指数基本恢复了正常，而伊洁那颗老是出血的门齿根部依然老是出血，尤其是在激动、紧张的时候，血水就如泉水一样地直往外冒。伊洁在走向受审台时，很是激动，一点也不紧张。是的，她是个爱激动的女人。

        Yes,  clearly, Yi Jie heard the railing of people around her. People were all outraged. They were all gentlemen, chaste ladies, respectful mothers and good wives. And clearly, Yi Jie felt as if so many fingers and fists were jabbing and swung at her. They were not targeting her today, but they had targeted her ever since.  At the moment she staggered she indeed gave an ironic smile which was hard to be seen.  In just a second, she felt that the liquid in her mouth was sucked away by a pair of warm and thick lips. For so many times, that pair of lips had sucked out her gushing gum blood in an attitude of devotion. In order to cure her illness, that thick-lipped man had searched medicine at all cost, and until that day she appeared in court, he still
could not cure her gum disease.  At the beginning, doctors explained that the cause of the gum bleeding was the decreased blood platelets, which implied that when some part of the patient's body gets injured and so the patient keeps bleeding without stop, and the patient may even die due from unstoppable bleeding because of the decrease in coagulation of blood, which somewhat scared Yi Jie, even today. Yi Jie then followed the doctor's order and ate a lot of peanuts with red skins, and drank numerous bottles of bitter syrup for coagulation. She also took some medicine for her illness, but she forgot what kind of medicine it was. She did a blood test after treatment for a period of time, and the result showed that her blood platelets were back to normal, but her gums which always bled remained the same: the situation got worse especially when she got excited and nervous. Her gum blood still gushed as if it was a fountain. When Yi Jie plodded  towards the trial stand she was very excited but she was not nervous. Yes, Yi Jie was a passionate person who got excited easily.

           今天的现在，她的门齿根部又在出血，那个厚实而温暖的唇注定是不会来为她吸血了。
          她也不想吸了。就让那鲜红的血液流到唇边，如同刚挨别人揍一般。这样一副惨状，或许会赢来一些唏嘘，赢来一些粉面女人的同情和某种眼神的援助和暖意……
           她要这些吗？谁也不知晓。在座的人们只见嘴唇边挂着鲜红血液的伊洁的嘴角有一丝难以察觉的嘲弄的笑。
             她还在走。
        That day, right at that moment, her gums were bleeding again. That pair of thick lips were doomed not to come again to suck her blood. Neither, she didn't want to be sucked any more. She let her blood flow freely to the corner of her mouth, as if she was just badly beaten by someone. With that pathetic look, she might win some sympathetic attention, some support and
some warmth from the crowd.
         But did she really want that?  No one knew. What people saw was that, with bright red blood hanging between her lips, Yi Jie gave a mocking smile that was hard to notice.
        Her footsteps were still approaching the trial stand.
        走向受审席。她脚底的“踏踏”声似乎有了些弹性地轻松了些，泰然了些。她只要轻松或是泰然起来，浑身便散发出一种诱人的妖艳。谁也难以否认这个女人不是美丽的。她的美丽是古典的凄婉优雅和现代的火辣天然浑成。这个尤物。
        As she approached  the trial stand, the "Tap tap" sounds made by her footsteps now seemed to be a little bit flexible and relaxed. As long as she calmed down she would become so attractive. No one could deny that her beauty was classical with a natural modern feel. Yes, she was a sexy beast.
        她很凄婉，她很优雅、她很火辣。这个尤物终于站到了受审席。听众席间的人们面目都模糊，狰狞可怖。面对这样一种景观，伊洁反而镇定了。她的表情就像是在体验一次艰难的生命历程，而不是受审。
        She was sad, she was elegant, and she was hot. This sexy beast finally was pushed to the trial stand. The faces of the audience in the court had become blurred and horribly savage. Facing such a scene, Yi Jie was not frightened. Instead, she was calmed. Her expression told people that as if she was experiencing a difficult time in her life, but not on trial.

法庭上有些骚动。很显然，眼前站着这样一个尤物，男人和女人们都有些坐不稳实了。今天法庭如此座无虚席，不能不说与这个尤物的美丽有关。有几个女人起身要走，那是伊洁的好朋友，有几个男人也起身，犹豫着是走或是留下，他们也是伊洁的朋友。伊洁望着几个离开座位向法庭门外走去的背影，流有鲜血的嘴角露出了嘲弄的笑。
        A commotion rose up in the court. Obviously, all the men and women in the court could not calm down seeing such a sexy girl appear before their eyes. Now every seat inside the court was occupied. You can't say that there nothing related to her beauty.  Some women rose, they were about to leave----they were Yi Jie's friends, some men also stood up, hesitating. They could not make up their mind to leave or to stay. They were also friends of hers. Yi Jie looked at those  backs which were already walking towards the door. An ironic smile appeared on the corners of her mouth again, in which a trickle of blood was still coming out.

        她在嘲弄，她在讥笑。她自己也不明白，究竟是在嘲弄他们还是在嘲弄自己。她对她们很熟悉，如同熟悉自己。她们生活得都不很好。但是她们每天的日子表面看上去，似乎过得无比的欢乐穿戴得也很雍容华贵漂亮得体。有几个丽人的丈夫地位也不错，经常携了自己的夫人出入什么什么人的生日派对，什么什么舞会、晚宴，给妻子无尚的荣耀。公休假时还成双成对地到朋友家去玩牌局,上街、逛商场，有说有商量地购物。一派的恩恩爱爱和睦相处。伊洁却知道，在这些光环的背后有不尽的阴影和龌龊。他们在人的背后，会为很多事情扯皮。不过他们扯皮时，绝不像伊洁同丈夫的扯皮那样公开化，那样不顾一切地比着嗓门儿怒吼。他们将门窗关得严严的，在铺有地毯，挂有上品面料窗帘的卧室，开着电视或打开音响咬牙切齿地相互恶毒中伤。但是第二天，走出家门，面对社会，面对芸芸众生，他们又是一对男才女貌，家庭幸福和美的夫妻。这些丽人的丈夫们都有红颜知己或情人。并且这些丈夫的情人们个个都很张狂。有的甚至公然对妻子们发动挑战。她们大多是妻子们的丈夫的秘书或公关小姐或涉外部主任之类的角色。往往这样的角色都是八面玲珑，眼观六路，耳听八方，妖艳乖巧讨人喜欢的甜妞。加上她们特殊的身份，她们的美貌，有多少好男儿不拜倒在石榴裙下？
        She was mocking; she was  ridiculing. She didn't even realize who she was mocking at, them or herself? She knew them well as she knew herself. They all lived in a bad condition, but every day they acted as if they enjoyed their life very much,  wearing pretty, elegant and decent clothes in a good mood. The husbands of some of them lived a good life, having an upper social status, so oftentimes they took their wives to participate in all kinds of high class parties, as if showing off and being at those parties and dinners were the wives' job.  On holidays, couple by couple, they went to play cards in their friends' houses, and shopped for luxury things in the shopping mall. Such a harmonious scene. But Yi Jie knew that there was a dirty shadow behind such a peaceful aura. They quarreled a lot when they were alone, but when they fought, they would never act like Yi Jie and her husband who shouted to each other openly and hysterically. Those couples would close windows tightly and hurt each other viciously gnashing their teeth inside their luxury bedrooms with expensive carpets and curtains and loud TVs. However, the next day, when they went out, when they faced society and public, again, they were nice couples, happy families, as if fighting, argument, and the hurting of one another had never happened. All the husbands of those beauties had female confidantes or mistresses who were all haughty women. Some of them even openly challenged the rightful wives. Most of those women were secretaries or took up the public relation or similar positions. Those women were often smooth, smart, flexible, sexy sweethearts, plus their special status, charm  and beauty. It was not surprising that many men would unconditionally throw themselves at their feet.
        伊洁曾碰上过难堪的事。好像是去年秋季的有一天，伊洁有事到一个大酒店去找一位丽人朋友的丈夫，他是那家酒店的总经理。先前，伊洁和她的丽人朋友到酒店来玩过几次。去唱过卡拉OK，打过保龄球什么的。那天伊洁到酒店后，轻车熟路地径直朝总经理办公室走去。总经理办公室是一个套间，丽人朋友丈夫的办公室在里间，外间是接待室。伊洁叩了叩外间虚掩着的门，没人应，她便推门向里间走去。猛烈间由挂在里间墙壁上的壁镜中看到公关部孙小姐面红耳赤地由丽人朋友丈夫的怀中挣脱出来。见此情景，伊洁先是愣怔了片刻，接着连连说：“对不起对不起，走错门了走错门了。”边说边车转身逃也似地跑了出来。心慌得如同自己做了什么见不得人的事被人抓住一样怦怦乱跳，竟然忘记了此行到底是来干什么的。这件事发生的第二天，正好是个星期天，伊洁的丽人朋友和她的丈夫和和美美地到伊洁家打了一天一通宵的麻将。夫妇二人玩得很快活、很开心。伊洁却为丽人朋友伤心万分……

        Yi Jie once encountered something embarrassing. One day last fall Yi Jie had a meeting with one of her beautiful friends' husbands in a hotel. That man was the manager of that hotel. She and her sexy friends had been there several times for karaoke and bowling, etc. That day after she arrived at the hotel, without a second thought, she walked towards the general manager's office. The general manager's office was a suite with a waiting room outside, and her friend's husband was inside the office. Yi Jie knocked at the door which was ajar, no response. Then she pushed open the door and walked in. But suddenly, in the mirror on the inner wall,  the scene of  Miss Sun of the public relation department struggling out of the arms of  her sexy friend's husband really shocked her. After a moment of dumbfounded silence Yi Jie uttered,  "I am sorry, very sorry, I came to the wrong place."  Then she rushed out of the office. Her heart beat so fast as if it was she who was caught doing something wrong, that she even forgot the purpose of going to the office. The following day was a Sunday. Yi Jie's sexy friend and her husband played Majiang in her house throughout the night with pleasure. They had a good time, but Yi Jie was so sad for her friend...

的确，伊洁不仅嘲弄别人，更多时候也嘲弄自己。她被推上受审席这件事的本身就隐含着无尽的嘲弄意味。甚至，很多时候她由这种嘲弄中，享到了一种无以形容的恶毒的快意。
        Indeed, Yi Jie  was not only mocking at others, but oftentimes also herself.  The matter of her being pushed to the trial stand implied such unlimited irony. Even most of the time she enjoyed a sort of wicked pleasure beyond description.
        已经站在受审席上的伊洁觉得应该扬扬头。想到此，她真的扬起了头。当她扬起头时，她看到了听审席间的人们的面孔个个糊涂不清，个个在咬牙切齿，个个在向她吐唾沫，抡拳头。事至今天，她也没弄明白，是什么力量将她弄到如此糟糕的地步。她就这样令人们厌恶，令人们不齿吗？她曾是那么真诚地对待生活，那么善良友好地对待所有的人，对待任何人都是笑脸相迎送，可是到最后呢……
        On the trial stand, Yi Jie thought that she should lift her chin up. As she thought, she actually did. As she did, faces of the audience in the court all looked so fuzzy, and everyone seemed to gnash their teeth in anger, spit at her and swing their fists at her. What kind of force had pushed her to that terrible situation? She didn't understand even till that day. How come she was so hated and  despised?  She once was so sincere to life and friendly to everyone, with her big smile, but look at it now.

        时间还没到，审判长还没来。
        庭下有好几个男人用迷茫或乞怜的目光望着站在受审席中的伊洁。伊洁此时虽然低垂着头，但她清楚地感觉到了那些可怜又令人作呕的目光在向她发出乞求的信号。他们谁也不明白伊洁今天会说些什么。她却知道他们今天肯定是看了张贴在大街小巷中的那张布告才来的。他们是为了证实一件他们无论如何也不愿相信的事实（这个事实令他们沮丧万分），他们谁也不会在千人百众面前对伊洁进行声援或是给她一点温暖，更不会为她承担一点责任。他们不会。他们谁也没这种胆量和勇气。他们同伊洁的情谊是极有限度的。人世间需要他们有充沛的精力去角逐的事情实在是太多。男人们是不会将爱情作为生命中至高无上的东西。只有女人，只有傻女人才会将爱情视作生命的唯一。伊洁就是这样一个傻女人。及至到她被推上受审席的这天，对这样一些道理，似乎还没怎么弄得十分清楚。唯一使她失望的是她的那种感觉。她感觉到庭下那几个同她有感情纠葛的男人们，谁也不会为她承担一点什么。他们来的目的只是为了证实一个事实：那就是他们在布告上看到的名字是否就是同他们有千丝万缕关系的那个女人所拥有的名字。名字只是个符号，人才是具体的，可供人宰割，可供人餐的。
Second
        It's not the time yet. The presiding judge had not come yet.
        With a confused look or begging eyes, several men in the audience seats looked at Yi Jie who stood in the trial stand. At that point, Yi Jie bowed her head. She understood clearly that the begging signals sent by those pitiful, but yet disgusting eyes. No one knew what Yi Jie would talk about today. But she knew that they must have read posters everywhere in streets before they came. They wanted to verify one thing that was hard for them to believe (the fact indeed frustrated them a lot) and none of them were willingly to give Yi Jie any support, warmth or comfort in public, no mention to share her suffering, since the friendship between them was so limited. Furthermore, there were so many things there waiting for them to compete, to consume their energy. Men will never treat love as the most important thing in their lives, but silly women do, they can't live without it. Yi Jie was such a silly woman. Even till that day when she was pushed to the trial stand she still didn't understand why. The only thing that made her feel disappointed was that she felt that  those men in the audience who once had  affairs with her wouldn't share her suffering. Their purpose of coming to the court was to verify one thing: they wanted to confirm if the name on the bulletin board belonged to that woman who once had had a relationship with them. However, the name was just a symbol, but the body was concrete, which was free for being slaughtered and eaten.
          是的，站在受审席上的这个女人，的确是个秀色可餐的尤物。她的美丽不用任何修饰，就可压倒群芳。可悲的是，她的美丽并没给她带来什么好处，而是灾难。
             觉得走了一段生命历程的伊洁,认为她是因袭了母亲的老路。而她的本意，是极不甘心于那样一种活法，那样一种生活方式的。但是，生活使她防不胜防地跌进了一种深渊。这种深渊将她没头没脑地淹没了，如同当年淹没她纯善年轻的母亲般残酷无情。因此，伊洁在每每拷问自我时，又愤怒于命运对她的不公。
            命运是一种什么东西呢？命运是一种什么货色呢？伊洁对此有着更大、更深刻的茫然。
            其实，她认识那个让她跌进深渊的名叫剑男的那个男人的当初，极其偶然。就如同她的生命是因为一次偶然的媾合而诞生于这世界一般。她对自己生命的来历的认识，一直糊涂不清。她认定自己的生命是一次偶然的媾合留下的谬误。
        Yes,  on the trial stand, the woman was indeed a real beauty. She could beat all other women without putting any makeup on. But the pathetic thing was that her charming looks had never brought her any good deeds but disasters.   

        After all those years of struggle, Yi Jie thought that she had followed her mother's footsteps, but she originally would never wish to lead a life like that.  However, it was life that tricked her into an abyss, it was life that caught her off guard. That abyss had gobbled her up thoroughly from head to toe, just like her mother, who back then, was still young and innocent,  being swallowed cruelly. Therefore, when Yi Jie tortured herself she was angry with the unfairness of her fate.

        But what is fate? Yi Jie was more bewildered than ever.

        In fact, meeting with the man named Jian Nan who later caused her fall into that abyss was just a coincidence.  Just like the chance of her life being born to the world, which was due to an accidental intercourse. She had always been confused about the origin of her life. She thought that her life was such a mistake caused by an accidental sexual behaviour.

她对自己的生命持怀疑态度，不是没有依据的。已经显老相而依然残留着曾经美丽过的影子的母亲，对伊洁讲她的生命来历时，总是闪烁其辞飘忽不定。一忽儿，母亲会在一个黄昏时刻，一定要伊洁坐到她的身边，含一脸悲愤地对她讲，她的生命是砸烂公检法那个年代的一次混战被人强暴后留下的结果；或者过了些时，母亲又会是满脸红晕，充满温柔地进入另外一种境界地讲，伊洁的生命是她在一次挨斗后，不堪忍受凌辱跳水自尽，被一名打成反革命在逃的公检法干部奋不顾身跳进水塘中将她救起后，背到山洞中悉心照料了几天几夜，在这如同传奇般的情境中，她同那个救她的男人产生了爱情的结果。这两种说法的时间，都有些前言不搭后语地相差一年或半载。母亲每次讲这些经历时，神情很是凌乱，语气也模棱两可，颠三倒四。她重复地讲着伊洁的生命是那两次事件的结果，但时间从来没一致过。也许，伊洁的母亲从来就没有想过，她这样不明不白地讲伊洁的生命来源和出生年月的混乱，对伊洁是一件多么残酷的事实。及至使伊洁为自己的生命感到可耻，感到自己的生命之轻如同一件信手就可拎来的物品。
        She was skeptical about her own life. She had her own reason. Her mother who was getting old, but whose looks still showed that she was once a beautiful woman,  was always erratic and evasive when talking to her about the origin of life. Sometimes in the evening, she insisted to let Yi Jie sit beside her and said to her in a passion of grief and anger, telling her that her life was the fruit of the era when public security was ruined and  she was raped during a scuffle. And at another time her mother would gently say to her, in another version, with a full face blushing, that Yi Jie's life was the result of an insult--after being criticized and attempting  a suicide by jumping into water  and  was rescued by a desperate public security cadre who was convicted as a counter-revolutionary and at large. The Man carried her to a mountain cave and took good care of her for several days until she was cured. In such a legendary context, she had sex with that man who saved her life, and then Yi Jie was born. The time of the two versions of how she came to this world was so confusing, that there was always a difference of about a year or half a year.  Whenever her mother talked about such an experience, there was always a bewildered expression on her face, and her tones turned topsy-turvy. She repeatedly narrated that Yi Jie's life was the result of one of the two events, but the time was never consistent. Maybe Yi Jie's mother had never  thought about it.  Listening to how she was born in such a chaotic era, to Yi Jie, it was such a cruel reality. She even felt ashamed for herself, that she thought her life was so unimportant as if it was something handy, something that could be obtained anytime, anywhere.

             当然，母亲在颠三倒四地对伊洁讲这些时，她压根就不知道伊洁是在怎样的憎恨和诅咒。她痛恨自己的生命呵！她不知道自己的生命是爱之果还是恶之果？！
             但是无论是怎样一种结果制造了她的生命，对伊洁而言都是一种痛苦，都是一种残酷。伊洁认定自己的生命注定是有一个或两个男人的精血无疑了。这些混帐的家伙们，他们不仅在女人身上寻欢作乐，还要在女人身上种下灾难、谬误的种子。是他们造就了伊洁的生命，也同样是他们为伊洁打下了灾难的伏笔……
        Of course, when talking about how Yi Jie was born in confusion, the mother didn't know how much Yi Jie hated and cursed at what she had heard. She bitterly hated her life, that she had no idea whether her life was a fruit of love or of sin? No matter what fruit she had been with such pain already there, and that was a cruel reality. Yi Jie firmly believed  that she had a doomed fate and she must be the child of a man or two. Those men were such bastards, that they not only played with women but also made them suffer and grow seeds of disasters and misfortunes inside the bodies of those poor women. It was those evil men who had made Yi Jie's life, and it was also those wicked men who had foreshadowed disasters for her life.

             伊洁认为，生命其实是很廉价的，来得也容易——在荒原、在野地、在芦苇荡里、在田头地角、野草丛中，干草垛中、破败不堪的庙宇、堆放杂物的仓库，当然还有高级宾馆、还有爱的婚床，无处不都是制造生命的温床，无处不是偷情者的宫殿。有情也好无情也罢，只要媾合，只要有男欢女爱的性事发生，就会制造一个生命。有人将偷情称之为“野性美”，称之为生命活法的上乘之举，称之为生命的原生态。谁也不管他们给偷情时制造的另一个生命将会带来什么样的命运和恶果。伊洁顽固地认为，命运才值钱。命运能够使生命的载体上天堂，命运也能使生命的载体入地狱。无论多么红颜的女子，只要你的命运不济，你就会挣扎于这社会的最底层，自生自灭在愁吃愁穿的穷苦日子中；你就会为了改变这不济的命运，付出比别人多上千百倍的艰苦卓绝的努力，甚至将你的生命押上赌场，孤注一掷。这难道就是命运对生命的揶揄么？
        Yi Jie believed that life is very cheap ---- it is easy to come ---- in the wilderness, in fields, in reeds, in dry haystacks, in broken temples, in warehouses full of junk items, and of course in luxury hotels, and on lovely wedding beds. Everywhere is the place for child birth; everywhere is a palace for love-making. No matter having love or not, once a couple have sex, they will give a life. Someone says that adultery is from the wild nature, and is the superior way of living, called the original ecology of life. Who cares about what fate and fruit of sin will be brought to the new life because of adultery? Nobody cares. So Yi Jie stubbornly  thought that fate itself is valuable, nothing else. The fate enables the body of a person--the conveyer of life to go to heaven, and at the same time, it can also carry it to hell.  Fate might make a girl struggle at the bottom of society, worry about food and clothing, if fate was not a good one.  Then she has to make incredible efforts to change it, even put her life on the gambling table----bet all in a single throw. 伊洁第一次填履历表时，嘴角就挂有嘲弄的笑靥。那时她小得很，只7岁。这表明，她嘴角嘲弄的笑是与生俱来的，绝不是后天才有的。她嘴角嘲弄的笑是一个男人遗留在她身上的痕迹，是溶进她血液中挖不走，割不掉的遗传因子。她在冥冥中见到过这个嘴角挂着嘲弄笑的男人的。
        When Yi Jie filled out her registration forms for the first time, she even had a mocking smile on her face. Back then she was only seven years old. That was to say that she was born with that mocking smile. There was no way she could give such a smile by herself. That smile on the corner of her mouth was left by a man, as if it was something already dissolved in her blood stubbornly and could not go anywhere. It was something in her genes. She seemed to have seen that man with the taunting smile somewhere before.

Since she was seven years old, Yi Jie's information record at school looked like this:

Having no father was humiliating and ironic to a family and a little girl. Starting from grade school she really wanted to put the name of the man in her imagination into the column of father. She hoped to have a father.  But the strange thing was that, she always had a taunting smile on her lips had never asked her mother why she didn't have a father.

        她不问这个问题不等于说她没有思考这个问题，她宁可自己苦思苦想，悲愤优伤，甚至为此而不甘心地堕落。当然她的堕落是后来的事，也是出乎人们意料的事。“那么乖顺的一个女娃，咋说变就变了呢？”伊洁堕落后，时常能听到一些街坊邻里，那些很正经八百的大婶们、伯母们如此这般地议论。也是这些大婶伯母们，在伊洁先前想好好做人努力向上奋斗时发出“咳，那样一个货色养出来的女子能有多大造化”的哀叹。好像伊洁若是出息了，便是人类的大不幸似的。
        However, her not asking that question didn't mean that she didn't  think about it. She would rather pour it over bitterly in silence. She even gave herself up gradually, and that was out of people's expectation. "What a good girl, how could she become like that?" These kinds of comments by women in the neighborhood about Yi Jie went into her ears after she gave herself
up, right when Yi Jie wanted to become a good person and make an effort to live a good life, "Alas, such a woman will never be able to educate a wonderful girl." Those women sounded like it would be an unfortunate thing to humans if Yi Jie was a high-minded girl.

        伊洁在向上努力奋斗的那些日子里，她很穷究自己生命的根源。当她穷究自己生命根源的时候，常常沉入一种冥想状态。伊洁的出生地是在全国地图上找不到标志的某个小镇。一条小溪悠悠流过，如同一把利剑将小镇由中间剖开，使得本来小得可怜的镇子一分为二地扔在了小溪的东西两边。伊洁的家在小溪的西边。小镇的夏天，静得连怕热的知鸟的鸣叫声都听不见。离她家不远处有口不大的池塘。每到夏季，若不是池塘里盛开的荷花向她展示着生命的艳丽，伊洁毫不怀疑人类在那一刻已不复存在。门前那条蜿蜒的小土路，一天半日也没个人走过。伊洁常坐在门前，手托腮帮，想象着父亲的模样。有时她就同自己打赌：此时走过的任何一个男人，她就认他是自己的父亲。结果，好久以后，走过来的却是一个边走边猛烈咳嗽的驼背老妪……
        While making an effort for a better living, Yi Jie tried to investigate the origin of her life. Whenever she thought about her life she sank into a deep meditative state. Yi Jie was born in a small town which was hard to find on the map. A creek floated  across the small town slowly as if it was cut into two parts in the middle  by a sharp sword, making the small town look even smaller----one part in the east, the other in the west. Yi Jie lived in the west side. In the summer time, the small town was so quiet that you couldn't even hear the singing of  cicadas who feared of being hot. Not far away from her house, there was a small pond. When summer time came, if it was not the lotus flowers in the pond waving at her, Yi Jie would doubt that human beings were no longer existing in her area.  It was hard to see anyone passing by the winding dirt road in front of her house, sometimes for the entire day. Oftentimes, Yi Jie sat before her door, resting her chin in her hands and imagined about her father's looks. Sometimes she bet with herself: if any man walked by at the moment, she would call him father. As a result, after a long period of time, there was just an old woman waddling by, in a bent-over position, coughing severely.

那时，她不知道自己为什么没有父亲。她更弄不清楚，没有父亲，母亲又是怎样生育的她？ 有一次上自然课（或是生物课），那个长了一副猴腮相的袁姓老师，先讲了马同什么什么交合之后生育的是什么什么，之后，接着讲了杂交出良种的原理。当他讲到杂交出良种时，课堂哄然大笑，那一张张有预谋般的笑脸，都望着伊洁。伊洁面对这一张张如花儿般盛开的笑脸，出奇的平静。平静得真想伸手去摸摸那张张笑着的、毛茸茸的嫩脸，给他们一个嘉奖，给他们一个安抚。她顽固地认为，一个人被一个群体重视着、关注着（无论这种关注对被关注者有益或无益），这个群体才是应该被安抚的、被怜悯的对象。然而，小小人儿的伊洁，回敬给50多张笑脸的，却是比哭还难看百倍的笑。
        At that time, she did not know why she had no father. She didn't even know that if she had no father, how could her mother give birth to her. Once in a science class or a biology class,  that teacher Yuan, who looked like a monkey, talked about the intercourses between animals, said that if a horse makes love to whatever animal, it would  give birth to whatever kind of animal, and then he explained the theory of the principle of fine breed. When he talked about the fine breed the whole class burst out laughing, and all the eyes shot at Yi Jie's face, all at once, and all the laughing faces looked like that they had been premeditated to do so. Despite all those faces like flowers in bloom Yi Jie was strangely calmed and she even wanted to reach out her hands to touch those laughing, pink and tender faces, giving them rewards and comfort.  Stubbornly, Yi Jie thought that if a group of people  paid too much attention to a certain person, no matter it was good or bad to the one being cared about, that group of people should be the ones who needed comfort and sympathy. Anyway, the little Yi Jie  laughed back at all her fifty classmates with an awkward expression on her face that looked way worse than crying.

        伊洁的成绩确实出乎寻常的好。在全年级都是出类拔萃的。对于伊洁的聪明，人们自有他们的说法。有些居心叵测的人，总是有意无意地对伊洁说些闲言碎语： “私生子，就是聪明哟，偷吃的食就是饱肚子。”这是一种说法。伊洁无疑是她母亲偷情的结果。还有人说，男女二人在偷情时达到一种极至的境界受孕的孩子是顶聪明的。听到这种说法，伊洁就心平气和地想，不知母亲同不知姓名、不曾谋面的父亲媾合时，是否达到了如人们所说的那种极至的境界。
        Yi Jie did exceptionally well in study indeed. Throughout all her grades in the school she was excellent. However, people had their own opinions about Yi Jie's talent. Some evil-minded people intended to badmouth her: "Such a bastard. Even if she is smart, then so what. Her

        Yi Jie really didn't care about those evil and insulting comments against her. What actually hurt her was her hatred towards life. She even attempted to commit suicide so as to vent out her sadness and hatred (In fact, she failed in her attempt). That was why she started to dream some strange and dark dreams. All her dreams were broken and piecemeal. In wilderness or wild land. She always hid herself in her mother's body and peeped from inside, wanting to see how those men's hard penises intruded her mother. Those different intrusion by different penises made Yi Jie feel so humiliated.  She was so ashamed because it was not like what her mother said that her life was from sperm of a man or two.         The second man was the stout furnace worker from a chemical factory, who had earned credit for discrediting the police station, prosecution system and the court.         The hearing time arrived but the presiding judge had not come yet. All the people were waiting. Some chatted in a soft voice while Yi Jie whispered to her memories... She always liked to judge herself in spite of the judgement result.
        伊洁做梦也没想到，在那样一个如古堡般死寂的小镇上的某个夏日里的冥想，竟然在若干年后，搬到新居的地方实现了。
        Yi Jie never thought that her meditation in a deathly quiet small town on
that summer day would be realized years later after she moved to her new residence.
        那一天的下午，失业在家的伊洁倒是没有对父亲的冥想。她正在为病瘫多年的老母亲搓腿揉背时，听到了敲门声，便起身去开门。站在门前的，是个显得很有些疲惫、年近五旬的陌生男人。那男人呲牙冲伊洁笑了笑，也许是过于疲惫之故，笑得很是勉强。伊洁却由他勉强的笑中看到了他满口东倒西歪、难看得要死的牙，让人见了就不会忘记。陌生男人笑过后，彬彬有礼地问：“请问林一军家住这幢楼吗？”问得有些怪怪的。
        That afternoon the jobless Yi Jie didn't think about her father. She was doing massage to her mother's legs and back. Hearing knocks she rose and walked to open the door. Standing at the door was a strange man in his fifties, looking tired. The man grinned at Yi Jie, reluctantly,
maybe it was because of his exceeding fatigue.  Just right at that point Yi Jie saw his unforgettable ugly-looking teeth.  The strange man asked politely with a smile, "Is this the residence of Lin Yi Jun?" sounding a bit weird.

        如果这位陌生男人问的不是林一军而是另外一个人，那么，这个故事也许不会有这么复杂。我们的主人公伊洁便会冷冷地回答：“不知道。”然后关上门，任他自己找去。事实上，她确实不知道谁谁住哪幢楼的几单元几层楼几门牌号。虽说搬到这儿已有好几年了，但她对周围邻居的情况一概不知，陌生得很。当然，别人也不知她姓甚名谁。这座城市的人，个个心气儿高得很，谁也不把谁放在眼中，老死不相往来。偏偏凑巧的是，在大搬迁时，房管局的房管员，阴错阳差地将两家的钥匙给弄错了，使得领到钥匙的两家都打不开各自分到的新居。几乎是在同一天的同一个时辰，两家户主都到房管局去询问。经查核，原来房管局的工作人员将他们两家的钥匙张家的给了李家，李家的给了张家。他们当即在房管局交换了钥匙。在交换钥匙时，林一军告诉伊洁说：“我叫林一军，在市体协工作。我们家就住你们家那幢楼的后面，也是四楼。欢迎你随时到我家来做客。”对林一军的过分热情，伊洁只是对他淡淡一笑，以示作答。她哪儿知道，林一军当时同他的小情人打得火热，如漆似胶。别人说，心中充满爱意的男人，对他所碰见的所有女孩，往往会表现出友善和怜香惜玉的情状，这一点似乎在林一军的身上得到了比较充分的验证。

        If the strange man did not ask for Lin Yi Jun but another person, then this might
not be such a complicated story. Our protagonist Yi Jie would reply coldly, "I don't know." And then she would shut the door on him and let him find it out himself. In fact, she had no clue who lived in which unit in that building. Although she had moved into that building for a few years now, she still didn't know anything about  her neighbors. Of course, nobody knew who she was either. In this city, everyone is so cocky, that they didn`t care who you are and never want to have a connection with you. The thing was, during her move, the staff of the management office mixed up her keys with another unit so that none of them could open their doors. Two families of the different units went to the management office to work the thing out at the same time on the same day.  After they verified the mistake, they exchanged keys in the office. At the point that they exchanged keys, Lin Yi Jun said to Yi Jie, "My name is Lin Yi Jun, I work for the athletic association of the city. I live behind your building, same floor, the fourth floor. You are welcome to my house anytime!"  Yi Jie gave him a slight smile at his strong passion. She didn't know that at the time Lin Yi Jun felt in love with his little lover wholeheartedly. There's a saying that goes like this: if a man falls in love with a girl he will also express love and kindness to other girls. Now the saying was proved true.

        "Lin Yi Jun." Yi Jie repeated the name. "He's behind this building. Unit two, fourth floor." She pointed back using her right finger. The strange man thanked her and went from the building with his luggage.
        这实在是一个没有任何特殊意义的日子，阳光也不明媚。然而，正是这个阳光并不明媚的日子，却为伊洁埋下了无可挽回的灾难的种子。我们的故事也由此发生了急遽的变化。
        It was such an insignificant day, even the sunshine was not so bright. But that not-so-sunny day was the day when Yi Jie sowed the seeds of  irrevocable disaster. So the sudden change of our story occurred at that point.

        Of course, if Lin Yi Jun, whom the strange man was looking for, was home that day,  the story might have developed  in a different direction. But the strange thing was, neither Lin Yi Jun was home nor his wife and child. His door was locked. Knocking at the door without getting an answer, the strange man actually returned  to Yi Jie's house somehow.
        他提着背着几个大大的行囊，神情极疲惫。眼圈儿全是黑的，明显的睡眠不足。他放下右手拎着的行李，再次敲响了伊洁家的门。
        That man carried a few big bags, looking so tired. With black circles under his eyes. Obviously, he didn't have enough sleep. Dropping his bags with his right hand, he once
again knocked at Yi Jie's door.
        听到敲门声，伊洁再次开门时，见站在眼前的仍是那个陌生男人，她蹙起眉头有些不耐烦地说：“怎么老是敲咱家门哩？又不认识。”顿了顿，又说：“不是告诉你了吗，林一军家在后面一幢楼，也是二单元四楼。”陌生男人像是没看见伊洁的不高兴似地，和颜悦色地解释说：“林一军家没人，实在对不起，又来打搅你了。”他还说，这是他第一次来这座城市。他和林一军是大学同学，已经有二十多年没有见面了，他是出差路过此地，因为无法确定来此地的具体时间，由此事先没有通告林一军。也就是说，林一军并不知道他的同学要来见他这回事。陌生男人说，他想到林一军单位去找他，带着这许多东西不方便，意思是想将这些行囊暂时存放在伊洁的家中。
        Hearing knocks again, Yi Jie opened the door. Seeing the strange man, she scowled and said impatiently, "Why are you knocking at my door again?" She then paused and said, "Didn't I tell you that Lin Yi Jun is just behind this building?  Same unit same floor."  The man, as if he didn't see that Yi Jie was upset, he explained pleasantly, "Nobody's home in Lin Yi Jun's unit. I am so sorry to bother you again." He then explained that it was his first time visiting that city. He and Lin Yi Jun were classmates in university and they hadn't met for twenty-some years, since they graduated. He was on a business trip passing through that city. Since he couldn't tell Lin Yi Jun about the exact time of his arrival, he didn't let Lin Yi Jun know before he came. That was to say Lin Yi Jun didn't know that he was coming. The strange man said he wanted to go to  Lin Yi Jun's company to find him, but with the heavy luggage it was hard for him to do so. Therefore,
he wondered if he could leave his luggage with Yi Jie in her unit.

        伊洁的身子一直斜挡着门，一点也没有让对方进门的意思，场面有些尴尬。 躺在病床上的母亲像是看不过去了，她斥责伊洁少了家教，不懂礼貌。母亲说：“过门就是客，还不快请客人进屋来。”
        Yi Jie leaned against the door and kept the man from entering.  The situation now became a bit awkward. Yi Jie's mother who reclined on the sickbed couldn't stand her attitude anymore, so she reprimanded Yi Jie, saying that she was impolite. Mother said, "Every visitor  counts as a guest,  so let him in."

        "Every visitor counts as a guest."  Yi Jie heard mother saying  that feebly, her heart trembled for a second. She just felt that the words out of mother's mouth were exactly like her meditation years before.  She could not help recalling the meditation that summer afternoon "Any man who passing by at this moment  is my father."  Giving a look to that man who was welcomed in by her reluctantly, Yi Jie found that the man, who was bending over to collect his luggage, with his head bowed, his face appeared a bit thin and was red like he was blushing.  His ears stuck out. She could only see his profile. He looked so relaxed as if he was a traveler who had just got home. Seeing this, anger emerged in her heart without  reason: " What on earth is making him feel at home? It is my home!"
        进门后给伊洁这样一个侧面的男人，却有某种无以言状的吸引力。这种吸引力，使伊洁不由自主地对他注意起来。她惊诧地发现，眼前这个男人是那样熟悉，似是在哪儿见过？在哪儿呢？伊洁追寻着自己的记忆……忽儿，她似是在纷繁零乱如麻的记忆碎片中嗅到了一种气味。这气味是由这个陌生男人的身上散发出来的。没一会儿，她又从自己的身上嗅到了同样的气味。她觉得这气味好闻极了。那是一种父女之间才有的共同气味。那是亲人之间才能感受到的气味。
        The man entered the door. Somehow, beyond words, his profile seemed to be so attractive to Yi Jie, which made her keep her eyes on him. To her surprise, the man in front of her eyes looked so familiar, where did she see him before? Where? Yi Jie searched  her mind...  All of a sudden, as if she smelled a certain kind of odor in her messy and broken memories, she found that odor was sent out by this strange man. A moment later, Yi Jie also smelled the same kind of fragrance on her body. She thought that smelled so good. That was something common shared between a father and daughter. That was an odor that can be felt only between family remembers.

         Finding the smell of her father made Yi Jie feel panicky since it came so fast and abrupt, as if it was a  story from Arabian Nights. Although she had been looking for her father for a long time, when facing him in person now, she still felt fear. She had sworn to find her father through a unique way, but she had no idea how unique the way could be, which was always ambiguous. Or maybe subconsciously she had never thought about how she could find him, and now, all of a sudden, her dream came true. She was really impressed by the strange man's low pitch voice, as if she had been listening to him for ages in spite of his bad-looking teeth. Out of
the blue, Yi Jie felt like she was a child who was put in a bamboo basket that floated on the river, following currents and approaching the man. Was he her warm bay?
        忽然间，她发觉她不可能像自己想象的那样去主宰父亲们了。至少难以主宰眼前这个浑身充满父亲气味的男人。

        All of a sudden, she found that she could not possibly dominate her fathers as she imagined she could. At least she could not do anything to the man who was full of father-like sense, who was now standing before her.
         What was even worse was that, Yi Jie saw that her mother who had already sat up from her sickbed gave the man a frivolous smile.  Suddenly, Yi Jie felt so bad about her mother's flippant behaviour. Because of that coquettish smile, Yi Jie thought that
her mother must have had an affair with that strange man before, so she contemptuously thought that her mother was a born slut. As she thought in that way, her mother, as if she had extrasensory perception, gave Yi Jie a sharp look. As Yi Jie's eyes met her mother's, she felt so shameful about her life. At the same time, she felt delight in the misfortunes of her mother. She sneered at her mother's foolishness to give birth to her who fought against her.  Stubbornly, Yi Jie decided that a woman without power of making a living for herself should not have a child.

        By the time that stranger caused drastic change in Yi Jie's life, it was the high time for those enterprises across the country to reform their business. 因为这句“很多的男人是喜欢有这样一种眼神的女孩的。” 与下一句“人们认为，有这样一种眼神的女孩，是很善解人意的。 ” 中重复的地方是 “有这样一种眼神的女孩” ，  因为英语写作是不喜欢重复的， 所以汉语翻译成英语时候也要避免近距离的重复，所以我放弃直译。我试图在不改变原句意思的基础上作出这样的表达。 谢谢唐老师！

然而，事实很快就粉碎了伊洁对叶强刚刚滋生的一点点好印象。
However, things happened later ruined the good image she had just built up in her mind.
        有天下午刚上班,一身酒气的叶强突然闯进伊洁的办公室,没头没脑地说了些前言不搭后语的话。他边说着话儿，边往正伏在办公桌上写一份市总工会催要的总结材料的伊洁的身旁凑的同时，伸手揪了一把伊洁的脸蛋。“啊……”伊洁吓得惊叫了一声，弹跳了起来。然而，她不知道反抗，也不知道逃走，只是傻愣愣地站在那儿，捂着狂跳不止的心口，自我安慰地自语：“这是叶厂长跟我开玩笑，无伤大雅无伤大雅……”
        One afternoon as it was the time to begin to work, Ye Qiang, all of a sudden, rushed into Yi Jie's office, reeking of gin and saying something incoherently to her. Yi Jie approached him trying to open and check his uniform. That Rash Fellow not only refused, but also badmouthed her evilly. However, Yi Jie thought that she was just doing her job, and so she insisted on checking his tight uniform. As a result, they started to push and pull on each other. "Ouch ...." The Rash Fellow 's bike leaned to one side and the thing wrapped
by his uniform fell off the bike basket and gave Yi Jie a perfect hit on her instep. The thing turned out to be a roll of copper wire. Yi Jie screamed and fell down on the ground. The Rash Fellow took the opportunity to escape. As he ran away he said angrily, " I will come back to get you!"

I am just doing my job and being responsible and following rules."  Therefore, Yi Jie wrote an incident report about the theft of copper wire conducted by Rash Fellow and submitted the report to the security department of the company.

又过了几日的一个早晨，值夜班的伊洁像往常一样，早早起来，将厂区卫生打扫干净后，还不到交接班的时间。她拎了二只热水瓶正准备到锅炉房去打开水，突然由外面冲进来一个脸色蜡黄，塌鼻梁翘嘴巴的男人。这男人一冲进门房，就拍桌子砸凳子地大吼大叫，扬言要杀人。还骂了很多脏话。抖落了好多人的隐私，包括伊洁身世的不清白，也被他抖了个底朝天。伊洁根本不认识这个男人，这个男人也不是本厂职工。可是他对伊洁的身世却了如指掌。他肆无忌惮地大声吼叫着说伊洁母亲年轻时的二个大奶子特别诱人。他说伊洁的母亲年轻时被无数个男人占有，是她身上那两砣丰满诱人的肉给害的，还拖累得伊洁成为没人认帐的杂种。“哈哈哈，杂种。”恶男人狞笑着恶声恶气地说。
         In the morning several days later, as usual, Yi Jie took the night shift till early morning.  After she cleaned the areas she was responsible for, it was still early, so she carried two hot thermos bottles and got ready to get hot water in the boiler room. Suddenly a flat-nosed, mottle-skinned and tilt-mouthed man rushed into the boiler room as if he was a mad cow. As he arrived he pounded the table with his fists and smashed chairs, and roared and threatened that he would kill people. He shouted many swear words and disclosed many people's privacy including Yi Jie's. But Yi Jie didn't even know who the man was. He brazenly shouted out loud, saying that  Yi Jie's mother was so attractive and her large boobs were so sexy. He said that her mother had sex with so many men when she was young. It was her breasts that had brought her bad fate, and she had involved Yi Jie into trouble that people called her an illegitimate child.  "Ha ha ha. A bastard." That evil man said, in an angry tone.
        伊洁气得浑身如筛糠一样颤抖。她几乎要晕倒在地……乘载她的那个竹篮呢？那个竹篮轻而易举地被人戳破了，摧毁了！她沉到了水底。

        Yi Jie was so mad that she started to shiver. She almost passed out and collapsed to the ground...where was the bamboo basket which carried her? It was punctured and destroyed so easily! Now she sank to the bottom of water.

Yi Jie who now was in the bottom of water really wanted to kill that abominable guy.

        那天下午，因离下班时间已经不太久，那个长了满嘴丑牙、被伊洁让进屋子中来了的男人并没有到林一军的单位去找他。林一军是下午5点多钟回的家。反复到阳台上去张望的伊洁见林一军骑了自行车回来，老远就喊着告诉他说，他们家来客人了。接着又帮陌生男人把东西送到了林一军家。
         That afternoon, not long before being off duty, the man with ugly teeth who was let into the house by Yi Jie didn't go to see Lin Yi Jun in his company. Lin Yi Jun arrived at home at a little past five o'clock. Yi Jie repeatedly looked around the balcony, and once she spotted Lin Yi Jun coming on his bike, she shouted at him, telling him that he had a guest. And then she helped the strange men taking luggage to Lin Yi Jun's unit.
        陌生男人一到林一军的家，两个二十多年没见面的男人，高兴得像孩童般拥抱在一起，激动得都几乎老泪纵横。站在一旁的伊洁受了感动，鼻子酸酸的，眼泪差点就要流出。等两个激动的男人稍稍平息了点后，伊洁告辞。林一军说啥也不让她走，一定要她吃了晚饭再回去。
         When the strange man entered Lin Yi Jun's unit, the two men who hadn't met each other for twenty some years gave each other a big hug. They were so moved that they cried and their tears flowed like a tap, and that really moved Yi Jie too, who almost could not hold back her tears. After the two men calmed down, Yi Jie said she was going home. Lin Yi Jun didn't want her to go. He said she had to stay for supper.  
        林一军烧饭的动作特麻利，烹饪手艺也不错。没要一会儿的功夫，他做了一个清蒸桂鱼；一个八宝饭；一个西红柿炒鸡蛋；一盘青椒炒肚片；凉拌了几个凉菜；还到餐馆去炒了盘蛇肉丝；又买了瓶杏花村汾酒；一瓶葡萄酒；三听天然番石榴汁，红红绿绿地摆了满满一桌子。很有点儿像是过节日的气氛。
        Lin Yi Jun was not only a fast cook, but also a good cook. In just no time at all he finished cooking a few dishes: steamed mandarin fish, rice pudding, tomato and fried eggs, green peppers and fried pig-stomach slices. He also went to a restaurant to get a dish of fried snake meat, plus a bottle of Apricot Flower Village brand wine, a bottle of grape wine, and three tins of natural guava juice. All the foods and drinks fully occupied the table, that made the atmosphere look sort of festive.

菜啊什么的都摆上桌后，林一军在公安局当法医的妻子还没有回。伊洁和林一军的老同学都说再等等，林一军却潇洒地挥挥手说：“别等了别等啦。咱们家没这个讲究。历来是谁先回家谁做饭，做好饭后不等人，自个儿先吃。”
        Now all the dishes and drinks were set on the table, but Lin Yi Jun's wife who was a forensic doctor was not home yet. Yi Jie and Lin Yi Jun's classmate suggested that they should wait till  the doctor got home. Lin Yi Jun gracefully waved his hands and said, "No need to wait for her. We are not that strict at home.  We are easy going and flexible. Whoever gets home first will cook and eat first, no need to wait for the other  one. "

        事实上，林一军和妻子的感情并非他所说的那样轻松。林一军很惧内，不然他是操练不好这一手烹饪手艺的。据说林一军惧内的主要原因是源于他有很长一段时间对妻子的不忠，后来又被情人一脚给蹬了，才重返家园。在他重返家园之时，是他的妻子对他的过错不记前嫌，以虚怀若谷的胸怀和大度包容和谅解了。林一军的妻子不仅是位贤淑识大体的妻子，也是位出色的法医。她所在的公安分局很依仗她高超的医术及对每起凶杀案的精确判断，使该局的破案率之高为其它分局所不及。应该说有这样一位事业有成的妻子，林一军该满足了。然而，林一军却说他有他的苦衷。
         In fact, the relationship between Lin Yi Jun and his wife was not as good as he said. Lin Yi Jun was henpecked, otherwise he could not become a good cook. They said the reason why he was afraid of his wife was he had betrayed his wife for a long period of time. Then his mistress dumped him and he returned home. After he came back home his broad-minded wife forgave him. His wife was not only an understanding woman, but she was also an excellent forensic doctor. Because of her remarkable skills and accurate judgement to every murder case, the detection rate of the police station that she worked for had become the number one and other stations could not beat it. Having such a successful wife Lin Yi Jun should feel satisfied, but Lin Yi Jun said that he had his problem.
            三个经历各自不同的人，在一个没有晚霞的黄昏时分共进晚餐，这也算是生活的偶然性和随意性的再次验证吗？
          The three of them had different experience, but they had dinner together one evening when  there was no rosy clouds. Was that proof of the contingency and randomness in life?
            伊洁，一个在没有父亲的世界里长大、备受生活蹂躏的女孩；一个发誓要用自己的独特方式去履行自己的寻父计划、当寻到了自己想象中的父亲时却又手足无措的女孩；一个为了赡养被人们认为不洁、病瘫多年的老母亲必须承担生活重任的女孩，此时此刻，她的内心在想些什么呢？她还在为自己的失业而苦恼么？她还在诅咒她的命运么？她还在坚定不移地拟定她的寻父计划么？她还在恶毒地想要亲手报复所有侮辱过她的人，并要让他们如她一样流泪、流血么？
         Yi Jie was such a girl who grew up in the world without a father, a girl who had suffered a lot; a girl who sworn to implement her plan of looking for father, a girl who finally found her imaginary father and now didn't know what to do, and a girl who had to take care of her mother who was being considered a dirty woman who had been sick for years. What did she think about at the moment? Was she still worried over being unemployed? Was she still cursing her fate? Was she still determined about the plan of looking for her real father? Was she still thinking evil thoughts about taking  revenge on those who once insulted her, and still wanted them to bleed and shed tears?
             敲错门的陌生男人呢？他从何而来，要到哪儿去？他有二十多年没有同他的同学交往，在这二十多年的时间里，他干了些什么呢？像他这种年龄段的人，是人生最有作为最出成就的时期。名利、地位，都应该全都拥有了。他拥有了吗？他敲错了门，是神的旨意，还是生活的巧合？他明白不明白，他今天阴差阳错地认识了面前这个女孩对他而言将意味着什么？他同眼前这个女孩的母亲到底是什么关系？他同伊洁的母亲之间，是否如伊洁所怀疑的那样，有过情感纠葛？他身上果真有伊洁所嗅到的父亲气味吗？
         How about the strange man who knocked at the wrong door? Where did he come from?
Where would he go? He hadn't got in touch with his classmate for more than twenty years. What had he done in that period of time?  People his age should be successful in gaining reputation and high social status and should have been living a good life, but, did he? Was it the fate or the coincidence for him to knock at a wrong door? Did he understand what it would mean to this girl because of his mistake? What was the relationship between him and the girl's mother?  Did he really have an affair with Yi Jie's mother just like what Yi Jie had doubted?  Did he really have the father-like odor that Yi Jie smelled?
            林一军，一个体态发福得有些不成样子的男人，一个曾一度在妻子的面前专横跋扈，经常同小情人幽会的男人，一个被小情人抛弃后转而回到妻子身边俯首贴耳的男人，是否想过，他亲手做的这顿晚餐，会给另外二个男女带来什么样的命运改变？
        Lin Yi Jun, who was a little bit too fat, was once so bossy to his wife and had affairs outside his marriage, a man who was dumped by his mistress and then returned to his wife being obedient. Had he ever thought that the meal he cooked would bring what kind of fate to the man and the woman before him?

这是一顿极其普通又洋溢着浓厚友情的晚餐。这座城市的人们，谁也不会因为这顿晚餐而改变什么。人们在此时此刻依然在热衷于各自的事情。与情人幽会；同妻子做着乏味的爱；母亲看着孩子做作业；老年人守在电视机前不断地调频；年轻的妈妈手托丰乳给婴儿喂奶；噢，还有一对夫妻为电信局这月多收了他们家的电话费，在愤愤不平地议论着：“电信局真是越来越不像话了。”这是男人的声音。“就是啊，”男人的声音刚落，甜甜的女人的声音说：“现在各行各业的职业道德太差劲了。这月居然收了我们200多块钱的电话费。我们这可是私人电话呃，谁成天吃饱了撑的，没事干在家守着打电话。这不明摆着是有问题么。你去交费的时候，没同他们理论理论。”“谁说我没同他们理论呀。我还找到他们局长办公室呢。”“他们咋说？”“谁理你呀，局长办公室根本就没人……”“那我们也不能就这么认了呀。”“明天吧，明天我再去找他们。”……是啊，人们各自都有操不完的心，谁还会注意到林一军家的这顿晚餐呢。
       
        That was a very ordinary meal which was  permeated with a strong sense of friendship. People of this city would not change anything because of that meal. At the moment, people were still into in a variety of matters, including seeing their lovers; making love to their wife, which was so boring, mothers watching their children do homework; old people watching TV and changing channels frequently; young mothers were breastfeeding their babies; oh, of course, there was a couple who were annoyed by a bill from the telecommunication company which charged them extra fees. In an angry tone, they said, "They have gone too far these days! " The man said. "Who won't say so?" As the man paused, the woman said, in a sweet voice. "Professional ethics in all kinds of  businesses have sunk to the bottom these days."  "They actually charged us more than 200 Yuan for the phone bill this month. These are our personal calls. Who would make phone calls all day long? It is such a problem. When you paid the fee you didn't complain?"  "Who said that I didn't complain? I even reported to their director's office."  "Then what did they say?" "Who cares about us? There was no one in the office..."
"But we can't just let them charge us so much." "Tomorrow, I will talk to them tomorrow." ...Oh, yes, there are so many worrisome things that need to be taken care. So who would care about that meal in Lin Yi Jun's house?

         伊洁的胃口好得出奇。她一直低着头大口大口地嚼着美味佳肴，像是个饿极了的孩子般狼吞虎咽。她的这副吃相，引起了两个男人的同情。他们一致认为，伊洁一定是过着缺吃愁穿的穷苦日子。吃饭间，她很少说话。她边一点吃相也没有地猛吃猛喝边听着两个分别二十多年的男人各自讲着自己的人生经历。
        Yi Jie had an unusually good appetite. She gobbled down delicious foods as if she were a starving child.  Eating that way Yi Jie caught the two men's attention and they all had sympathy towards her. They thought that Yi Jie must be living in poverty. Yi Jie seldom talked while eating. All she did was eating like she hadn't eaten for three days and listened to the experience
shared  by the two men who hadn't met with each other for more than twenty years.
     原来那个敲错门的男人叫剑男，在北京某个出版社工作，好像是个编辑部主任什么的。他编过很多在文坛上叫得很响也因而使他不断倒霉的小说。1971年，他被莫须有的罪名遣送到湖北一个农场劳动改造时，差点丢了命。他是糊里糊涂被送到农场去劳改的，是没有明确罪名的劳改犯（据说是为了凑够上面分配下来的劳改人员名额）。因此，若干年回北京后，也没谁为他平反昭雪。回单位后，还是干他的老本行——文学编辑。到1988年，才提了个编辑部主任，出版出资为他的家里安了电话。末后，他自嘲地说：“这可能就是我人生的最高点了。”在叫剑男的男人的谈吐中，伊洁没听到他的任何风流韵事
         It turned out that the man who knocked at the wrong door was Jian Nan working for a publisher in Beijing. It seemed that he worked as an editor. He had edited many good stories in the literary world, which also brought him bad luck. He was exiled to a reformation camp through labour in Hubei by false accusations, and he almost lost his life there. He didn't even understand why he was sent to the labor camp--what did he do wrong? He had no idea.  (They said  that he was chosen for a quota). Therefore, years later when he returned to Beijing, nobody even complained for his unfair treatment. After he was back to his company he did his old job---literary editor. He didn't get any promotion to the director of editing department until 1988. The publisher rewarded him with a home phone. Later on, he said ironically, "This may be the climax of my life." In his words, Yi Jie didn't hear anything about his romantic affairs.
             林一军讲他的经历时，主要是讲他如何爱上了一个教体育的女教师，又如何对她全心身的奉献，想尽一切办法将她一步步由一个小镇的小学，调到市体委的群体科当干事。他实指望将小学体育女教师调到市里来后，他们就可朝夕相处，有更多的时间和机会幽会。他哪曾知晓，小他十几岁的女体育教师对他并无真心，只是利用他的地位作了往城里跳的一个跳板。小学女体育教师一跳到城里后，很快就毫不留情地将林一军给蹬了。林一军讲到这些时，略显懊悔地说，他同女体育教师很缠绵时，确实忽视了一个问题（忽视了什么问题他没讲），当他发现这一点时，为时已晚。被他一手提拔起来的女教师早已疏远了他，另有了意中人。林一军讲，他同小学女体育教师的一些纠纠葛葛事,他的妻子晓得得一清二楚，却从来没有质问过他。这样一来，倒使他在妻子面前多了一些愧疚……这个林一军，在讲他的这些隐私时，一点也不忌讳伊洁在场。

        When Lin Yi Jun talked about his experience, mostly he focused on talking about a female gym teacher, narrating how he fell in love with her and how much he had done for her and tried his best to promote her from a primary school in a small town to the director-general position in the bureau of sports of the city. He expected more chances to see her often. And he never knew that the gym teacher who was more than ten years younger than him didn't love him a bit. She just wanted to use him as a springboard to the big city. After the gym teacher was transferred to the city she dumped Lin Yi Jun right away without hesitation. When Lin Yi Jun talked about this, he appeared to be sort of upset. When he had fallen in love with the gym teacher he had indeed ignored an issue (he didn't mention what issue),  but it was too late when he noticed that. The gym teacher whom he helped a lot had been estranged to him and had gone to someone else's arms. Lin Yi Jun said that his wife knew everything about the relationship between him and that teacher, but she never questioned. And because of that, Lin Yi Jun felt a bit guilty before his wife. That man, when he talked about his personal life, he didn't mind that Yi Jie was listening at all.

两个分别多年的男人，各自谈了别后的经历，又谈了一些其它的话题。诸如物价、时局、政治、经济、体育运动和战争等等。尔后，他们都感叹人类的孤独，感慨人越来越走向自我，以自我为中心。之后，又各自表达了不愿与人这个群体交流、接触的心迹，诉说着心累。内耗太大。但又说不清为什么眼下人与人之间会变得越来越疏远、隔阂的症结所在。
        The two men who hadn't seen each other for such a long time talked about things they had experienced and some other topics such as the price of commodities, current political situations, politics, sports and wars, etc.  Afterwards, they lamented on how lonely and self-centered people have become these days. And they also disclosed their real thoughts that people these days were not willingly to communicate with others since they were tired and communication was time consuming. But they could not tell why people have become so estranged to each other these days, what was wrong? They had no clue.
             在谈这个话题时，林一军的儿子回来了。这是个高大英俊阳光的青年。学习成绩很出色，高考时是报考的名牌学府。结果运气不佳，临考前害了场大病，严重影响了考试成绩。最后只落得被省公安学院寻取。省公安学院离林一军的家并不远，因此，林一军的儿子每周六都要回家。林一军向剑男骄傲地介绍说，他的儿子一定会是一名很优秀的刑警。伊洁倒也觉得，刑警才是男子汉干的职业。
         At the point when they talked about that issue, Lin Yi Jun's son came back home. He was a handsome young man, a remarkable student at school. In high school, he planned to go to a top-notched university, but unfortunately, he was very sick before the university entrance exams, and that influenced his scores badly. He was then chosen by a provincial police academy  which was not far away from home. Thus, now he came home every Saturday. Lin Yi
Jun introduced his son to Jian Nan proudly, saying that his son was an excellent criminal police officer. Yi Jie thought that criminal police was a career for a real man.
              林一军儿子的聪明才智几乎全表现在那双令很多女孩子着迷的眼睛中。他进门的时候，伊洁和那个叫剑男的男人不约而同地将目光投在他那双充满机警的眼睛上。
       “叫伯伯、阿姨。”林一军对刚进门的儿子说。
       “伯伯，大姐。”林一军的儿子既遵从又有修正地招呼了两位客人。
        见儿子这么称呼客人，林一军有点发窘。他冲着伊洁歉疚地笑了笑，压低声音责备儿子说：“你怎么能叫大姐呢？没大没小的。”
         Lin Yi Jun's son was smart and talented, that you could tell from his infatuating eyes that attracted girls around him. When he entered the room Yi Jie and that man named Jian Nan met his sharp-witted eyes at the same time.
        "Say Hi to uncle and aunty. "  Lin Yi Jun said as soon as his son stepped into the room.         "Uncle and big sister." Lin Yi Jun's son obeyed his father and corrected him as he greeted the two guests.
        Seeing that his son greeted Yi Jie as big sister Lin Yi Jun felt a bit awkward. He gave Yi Jie an embarrassing smile and he lowered his voice to blame his son, "How could you call her big sister? Silly boy. "
       “我们早就认识。”林一军的儿子说。
       “你们……”林一军多少有点诧异地反问“认识。”
        伊洁肯定地点了点头。
        他们的确早就认识。伊洁晚上有爱看书的习惯。她们家书房的窗口正好对着林一军儿子卧房的窗子。冬天，这二个窗子都被厚厚的窗帘遮掩得严严实实的。春天来了，各家的窗子全都洞开。一天晚上，伊洁正津津有味地读着莫言的长篇小说《檀香刑》，忽然听到悠扬的歌声由窗外飘了进来：
                   我曾有这样一个人
                   这样的感觉不知如何形容
                   我是真的爱过你
                   我是真的想念你
                   ……
         "We have known each other for a long time. " The son of Lin Yi Jun said.
        "You guys ..."  somewhat to his surprise, Lin Yi Jun said, "...know each other?"
         Yi Jie nodded ensure.
         Indeed, they knew each other long before. Yi Jie loved to read books at night. The window of her study just faced the window of Lin Yi Jun's son. In winter time, those two windows were tightly covered with thick curtains. When spring came, all windows in the condo were opened. One night, as Yi Jie was enjoying a story written by Mo Yan named Sandal Wood Penalty, she suddenly heard someone singing outside her window:
        I had once such a person
        I don't know how to describe this feeling.
        I really loved you
        I really miss you
                   ……

               这是潘美辰的《为何爱情让我痛》。伊洁早就听过这首歌，听这支歌时，有种美感似还有淡淡的忧伤。隔天的晚上，这歌声再次响起时，伊洁起身离开书桌，走到窗前，冲着对面窗子里唱歌的年轻人微微一笑。歌者正是林一军高大英俊的儿子，他像是与伊洁有着某种默契似地冲着站在窗前的她摇了摇手。这一次的遥遥相望，使伊洁莫名地喜欢上了这个英俊的青年，也喜欢听他唱的那首歌。但是他们从来没有直接接触过。最亲近的表示就是，那青年边唱着歌儿边向站在窗前的伊洁友好地摇着手。伊洁曾有好几次想去同这个很有情趣的青年交谈的冲动，终是没有实现……
        This is Why Love Makes Me Feel Pain by Pan Meichen. Yi Jie had long before heard this song.  Listening to that song, Yi Jie felt a bit melancholy. The next night when she heard that song again, she rose, left the desk, walked toward the window and gave a smile to that young man who was singing. The singer was a handsome boy, the son of Lin Yi Jun, who seemed to have extra sensory perception and waved at Yi Jie who was standing by the window. Yi Jie somehow started to fall for that young and handsome boy since that romantic encounter. And she also liked him singing that song.  But they had never touched each other. Their intimacy was that when he sang he waved hands at her.  For several times Yi Jie had the impulse to talk to this interesting boy. But she still did not have the chance yet.

……父子俩为了喊“阿姨”或是喊“姐姐”发生了矛盾，似乎谁也说服不了谁。“男人们在争夺女人。”伊洁想。谁都想将自己与女人的距离拉近一些，再近一些。很多事情毕竟是在没有距离的情况下才能顺利进行的。
        ...Calling Yi Jie aunt or sister? The conflict happened between the father and the son and they could not convince each other. "When men fight against each other for women," Yi Jie thought, "they all want to pull the woman to his side and get close and closer to her.     
        年轻人总是活泼好动一些，还没等究竟是将伊洁叫“阿姨”还是叫“姐姐”的问题争辩完，林一军的儿子顺手将电视机“啪”地打开，荧屏上正好播放飞机失事由天空坠落的镜头。飞机的残骸还在袅袅地冒着青烟。飞机失事，机毁人亡，该是一件十分悲痛的事，而播音员只是履行公事般地将其当作一桩再平常不过的新闻将其公诸于众，脸部的表情永远是职业性的矜持和冷漠。
         After all, many things only can be done smoothly with  zero distance. However, the young man was active and lively." Lin Yi Jun's son didn't wait till the topic of calling Yi Jie
aunt or sister to be finished, he turned on the TV  readily. A plane crash scene was played on TV. The plane was falling to the ground from the high sky. The smoke of the wreckage still spiraled up in the wind. Plane crashed and people died----such a disaster and sad thing, but the news broadcaster treated it as if it was a very common thing happening every day. His expression always remained professionally calm and cold.

        谁说人不残酷呢？谁说人不冷漠呢？
        Who said that humans are not cruel? Who said that humans are not cold-hearted?

              林一军的法医妻子这时回来了。一进门，见来了客人，就很歉意地说“咦哟哟，真对不起，不晓得家里来了客人。”说完，便挽袖洗手张罗着要进厨房亲自再烧几个菜。“菜已经够多了，就不要再麻烦了。”“是的是的，你快坐下来吃吧。”伊洁和剑男都扯住她，不要她再烧菜了。林一军也很体贴地拿出了碗筷，也附和道：“算啦算啦，都不是外人。你也累了一天，快坐下来吃吧。”
        At that point, Lin Yi Jun's wife, the forensic doctor, was home. As she entered the room
and saw the guests, she felt sorry and said, "Oh, I am very sorry, I didn`t know that we had guests here." Then she rolled up her sleeves getting ready to cook more dishes. "We have enough food, no bother. " "Yes, we got enough to eat, please sit down and enjoy the meal." Both Yi Jie and Jian Nan stopped her. "No need to cook more." They said. Lin Yi Jun, at that point, was being so thoughtful, that he got his wife a bowl and chopsticks and he echoed to the guests, "Yes, sit down. They are all our friends. You have been working so hard today, now sit down and eat."
               林一军的妻子落座后，对大家讲她回家晚的原因是因为本市今天发生了一起凶杀案。一个企业的法人一家三口被歹徒残杀。歹徒杀了人后，又用被害者家中的电话投案自首。在刑警到现场之前，凶手又将法人8岁的女儿奸了尸。林一军的妻子说，案子的起因很简单，法人扣了凶手一个月的工资。据查，法人扣工资的理由是有些问题，但绝不至于严重到要杀人的地步。“唉，好端端的一个家庭，顷刻之间就毁了。”林一军的妻子叹息道。
        After Lin Yi Jun's wife sat down she explained why she was late coming home. It was because a homicide happened that day. Three family members of the owner of an enterprise were killed by a brutal criminal. After the savage slaughter of that family  the  criminal turned himself in using the phone in the victims' house. Before the police arrived, the killer raped the body of the owner's eight year old daughter. Lin Yi Jun's wife said that the cause of the tragedy was very simple: that was the owner of the business deducted the killer's pay for  the entire month. According to the investigation, the reason for deducting wages was wrong, but the victims didn't deserve to die. "A happy family was destroyed in the blink of an eye." Lin Yi Jun's wife sighed.
        许是受了林一军妻子讲的案件的影响，席间有了片刻的沉闷。林一军和剑男还有他的儿子在喝着闷酒，伊洁依然在低着头面无表情地嚼着什么。
         Silence fell for a while because of what was being brought up by Lin Yi Jun's wife. So now Lin Yi Ju, his son and Jian Nan drank quietly. Yi Jie still lowered her head and chewed her food.
        稍许，林一军的妻子打破沉寂，一脸困惑地说：“人怎么就变得越来越暴戾简单了呢？以前每起凶杀案件的背后，总会有千丝万缕的复杂背景和宿怨。现在可好，动不动就给你捅一刀子。”
         A moment later, Lin Yi Jun's wife broke the silence, and in puzzlement she said, "How come people have become more and more violent and simple? Back then, behind every murder case, there were always complicated backgrounds with so much hatred. But these days, they can stab you with a knife very easily."
        林一军的妻子在说这样的话时，伊洁突然感到很累。她本想离席告辞，又觉不妥。便耐着性子坐在席间，等大家吃完饭，林一军的妻子将碗筷啊什么的收拾停当，她才起身告辞。林一军全家都留她多玩一会儿，剑男也挽留她。她说：不了。再晚一点回家，我母亲会担心的。
